Renting a car
If you rent a car then you will need an international drivers permit. It costs about $20. You can get it through AAA either online or at a local site. You will rent your car at either Florence airport or Florence train station, depending on how you arrive.

I always recommend spending one night wherever you land in Italy. Get some rest before your make your way to the retreat. Train tickets
I recommend purchasing your tickets in advance. You can do it online. The train stations are super busy. When you arrive, look at the board, just like you do at the airport. Don't panic if there is no track assigned, sometimes they assign the track 10 minutes before arrival. When you see the track number on the board make your way to the platform. Wait at the middle of the long platform until your train arrives.
On your ticket, you will see two numbers, carriage number and seat number. Refer to the little photos on the tickets for guidance. Sometimes the translation of the words can be misleading. The photo of the train will have a single number. That is your carriage number. make your way to the correct carriage. The numbers are on the outside of the train. Once you are in the carriage, your seat is a number and a letter on your ticket, just below the photo of your seat (See sample ticket above) If you are worried that the train is leaving and you can't get to your carriage, than just get in any carriage. All of the carriages are connected, so you can walk to your carriage from the inside of the train. Another reason to pack light.
If you miss a train due to a delay of your arrival train than go to the help desk or look at the board for the next train heading to your destination. You can get on that train. When the conductor comes by for your ticket, tell them your last train was late, so you missed your connection. You should not have to pay for another ticket if it is the trains fault that you missed your connection.
